How to Create a Prescription

Create a prescription from the patient record, search the drug catalog, add prescription items, and review the saved prescription in Medicasimple.

Updated

Use prescriptions when you want medication instructions to stay inside the patient record instead of living in a separate note or printed document. The flow starts from the patient profile, continues with the medication details, and ends with a saved prescription the team can print or edit later.

1. Start a new prescription

Open the patient record and go to Prescriptions. If you are already working from another part of the profile, the Quick Actions menu is a faster route: choose New Prescription from the list.

2. Check the prescriptions tab

The Prescriptions tab is where the patient’s prescription history is kept. Before anything has been added, the page simply shows No prescriptions yet. Use + New Prescription to open the form.

3. Fill in the prescription basics

The patient is already attached to the prescription. The Prescriber field is the person who is issuing it; if it is empty, select the right clinician before saving.

4. Add the medication details

Each medication is added as its own line. Choose the Medication, then complete the dose, dose unit, frequency, period, duration, duration unit and instructions. Keep the instructions short and practical, for example how often the patient should take the medication and whether it should be taken after meals.

5. Use the medication catalog

When you click into the medication field, Medicasimple opens the medication list. Search by name and select the matching medication. If the prescription needs another item, use + Add medication and repeat the same fields for the next line.

6. Save, or save and print

When the details are ready, choose Create to save the prescription. If the patient needs a copy straight away, use Create & Print instead. You can cancel the form without saving from Cancel.

7. Review it from the patient record

After saving, the prescription appears in the patient’s Prescriptions table with the date, prescriber and note. From the operations column, the team can print, edit or delete the prescription when needed.
